2016 Lose it! Winner Member Highlight

“Exercise is not my favorite thing. I have been a long time member but an infrequent visitor to the gym. I became a regular visitor when I realized that in order to keep up with 3 kids and feel confident I could do any activity with them, I needed to get stronger and in better shape. I started slow, doing cardio with friends and eventually started training with Matt 1 day a week. It was never about weight loss and I was still an infrequent visitor to the gym. I think what finally pushed me to do the Lose it! Challenge and want to lose weight is that I didn’t know how to go at it alone. I saw myself in photos or the mirror and I didn’t look like the person I felt I was and decided I needed to Lose it! I had no real confidence in myself that I could change how I ate or have the willpower to eat better. Weighing in and getting measured was not the most comfortable experience but it did light a fire in me.

The big changes I made during the 3 months were adding 2 days of Zumba a week and completely overhauling my eating habits. I never liked thinking about food. The food was both a chore and a comfort. During the challenge, I made sure to eat 3 meals a day and snacked if I needed more. Vegetables and proteins were what I ate. I didn’t let myself eat any “kid food” like pizza or french fries during the challenge (a personal triumph). The nutrition consultation helped me find ways to cut more sugar from my eating but still satisfy the sweet cravings. It also helped me with food pairings so I didn’t get hungrier later in the day. Healthy eating moved from being something I really had to concentrate on to an unconscious choice.

The biggest things that helped me stick with the challenge were:

1. Not looking at the original measurements or my weekly weight until the very end. I didn’t want to get obsessed with numbers.

2. Support of family, friends and gym staff. It felt good to have so many people want me to do well.

3. A long-dormant competitive spirit kicking in.”

When you are ready to make a change, you are ready. This year, Jeanette was ready! It was awesome to know Jeanette prior to the “Lose it!” challenge, see her sign up with a little hesitation but then absolutely kill it. As the weeks went by we saw her come in more, her energy levels change, and how she carried herself, she was more confident and had a purpose. Jeanette dropped 6.22% body fat, 19 pounds, and 19.09 inches. She feels healthier, has more energy and because of that, she likes herself more which is motivation in itself to continue this journey. Jeanette, thank you for sharing your story with us and we are so proud and happy for you in all of your accomplishments.
