In part two of our wine series, Seattle's premier sommelier, David LeClaire, will return to teach us how to distinguish a sensational summer wine. The selections of wines will include Dry Rose's, Fresh Italian & Spanish Whites, and light reds.

In-House Squash Tournament Recap
By Squash Pro, Bruce Vinsonhaler
The In-House Squash Tournament concluded Friday, March 21 with exciting matches in three divisions. Josh Nicholson, after a two-year absence, proved to be too strong for the third division, beating Bernie McLaughlin in the final. Andrew Zachery won consolation. The second division went to Bob Eshelman, winning a tough five game final over lunchtime rival, Bob Gwinn. Eric Ward, another of the "Squash for Lunch Bunch", picked up the consolation. A determined effort by Scott Hamon carried him to victory over two-time runner-up Jeff Evans in the first division finals, with Jeff Wilson winning the consolation. Great sportsmanship was shown by all the players through out the week, making this one of the most enjoyable tournaments in recent memory. Thanks to all who participated.

Member Success Story: Kari Berge and Sherri Hainje
By Paul Nelson
Inspired by each other and the employees at the Club, Kari and Sherri have become an amazing and successful team. They became friends 12 years ago on the sidelines of their husbands' soccer team. It wasn't until August of 2007, after a combined total of 5 kids, that they decided to embark on their first serious fitness journey together. Both had ran a little bit in the past and played soccer; Kari had completed a triathlon, and done various fitness programs. After being inactive for over a year, they both inspired each other to start the Weight Loss Boot Camp program at the Club.
I created a plan that would change their lives. First, we addressed dietary habits; Sherri found she needed to eat much more protein and that she was allergic to wheat. They both kept food journals and together we made adjustments they could live with and still achieve their goals. Next came the exercise. They came to the club 3-4 times per week doing a combo of cardio and high intensity circuit training. I have noticed a huge increase in strength in both of them. Sherri has lost forty pounds since August and dropped three pant sizes. She says, "My mental health is improved. I'm not tired and I don't crave sweets as much!" Kari has lost fifteen pounds and two pant sizes, and is no longer as tired taking care of her three kids!
What's their favorite asepct of the Club?
Their favorite aspects are the personal training, group exercise, social activities and fantastic childcare!
What's next?
They both want to run a half marathon this year. Get back into soccer and maybe do a triathlon!
What's on your iPod right now?
Sherri: Matchbox 20, Jars of Clay
Kari: Gwen Stefani, Mary J. Blige
Best book you've read lately:
Sherri: Midwives
Kari: Eat, Pray, Love

What Exactly is Body Fat Percentage and Why Have it Tested?
Your body fat percentage is simply the percentage of fat your body contains. Our bodies are made of a lot of different kinds tissues and water. There is fat tissue as well as Lean Body Mass, which consist of bone, muscle and organ tissue. Did you know that two people could have the same height and weight but have different percentages of body fat?
Scales and height weight charts cannot determine the lean body mass versus fat mass or evaluate if a person is "over-weight". An individual can be "over-weight" and not "over-fat". For example, a bodybuilder may have 8% body fat, but at two hundred and fifty pounds a typical height weight chart considers him to be overweight. This is an excellent example of how lean body mass weighs more than fat mass. This applies to what appears to be a thin individual as well. Their structure may be thin and look like they have no body fat but they can still be "over-fat".
Extremely low body fat percentage is as much of a health concern as is too much. Too low of body fat has been related to health concerns such as low energy availability, and weak bones which increases the risk of stress fractures, osteoporosis and menstrual disorders. The higher body fat percentage, the more increased health risk for weight related illnesses such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and type II diabetes.

Winter Basketball League Championship Recap
"The Lakers vs. The Celtics"
Ken Waldo, Jody Reyes, and Jordan Reese led the Lakers to an undefeated season and a number 1 seed in the playoffs. No team was able to stop the dominating inside play of the twin towers (Reese and Waldo) or the outside shooting of guards Mark Hunsinger and Josh Stevenson. Jeff McDonald also played a stellar roll as a rebounder and 15-foot shooter.
The Celtics, a team of mostly non-members brought a completely different style of play to the court. Star guard and excellent 3-point shooter Drew Hubbard, led the team to an impressive record of 8-4 and a number 3 seed in the playoffs. Drew and his twin brother Kris were the best guard tandem seen on the Seattle Athletic Club courts in a long time.
Although both teams brought great amounts of talent to the championship game, the Lakers met their challengers with fierce play and aggressive shooting ending the game in dominating form. Congratulations to both teams on an outstanding season and post-season play.
You can catch these outstanding ball players on the courts during any of our many pick-up basketball times.
Contact Kellen McCoy to find out how to get involved in league play or pick-up games.
