Film Night: Bladerunner

Despite it's box office failure in 1982, Bladerunner has since become a cult classic; hailed for its production design, depicting a "retrofitted" future. The film was credited with prefiguring important concerns of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, such as overpopulation, globalization, climate change and genetic engineering.

FILM SYNOPSIS:
In 2019, humans have genetically engineered Replicants, which are essientially humans who are designed for labor and entertainment purposes in colonies off the planet. They are illegal on earth, and if they make it to our planet they are to be hunted down and killed.

Rick Deckard is a blade runner, or a hunter of replicants. A group of replicants make it to Los Angeles to seek out a way to extend their life span. Replicants have a built in four year life span, and this group is at the end. Although he hunts them to the end, the replicants end up teaching the detached Deckard what it really means to be human.

Tuesday, November 11th at 7:00pm. This event is free to members.

Wine and Cheese will be served during the film.

Meet Our Newest Cycling Instructors

The Seattle Athletic Club is excited to introduce our three newest instructors. These elite cycling instructors guarantee to make you sweat!

ASH MAY
Ash joins the Seattle Athletic Club after graduating with a B.S. in Kinesiology and a minor in Sports Medicine and Biology from East Texas Baptist University. After graduation, he was awarded an internship at the Cooper Fitness Center in Dallas, TX. Where he received certifications as a Master Fitness Specialist and Health Promotion Director. Ash comes to us with ten years of experience as a personal trainer, gym director, and group exercise instructor. Ash is currently in his fifth year at Bastyr University studying naturopathic medicine, with a special interest in physical medicine. Although medical school consumes most of his time, he enjoys spending time with his church family, hiking, sightseeing, skydiving, and just laying in the sun (when it’s here)!

Be sure to join Ash on Mondays at 6:30pm, and Fridays at 7:00am.

CINDY KRUGER
Cindy has been teaching group fitness since 1995. She's taught everything from step, cycling and pilates to strength conditioning. Cindy moved to Seattle ten years ago, originally from Yakima, to experience life in the big city. Cindy was also drawn by her passion of frisbee challenges. The move to Seattle allowed her to expand her experience. Cindy just recently returned from Italy where she competed in the FPA (Frisbee Freestyle Players Association) World Championships and took home the World Title again. Yes, Cindy is currently the reigning Women’s FPA World Champion and holds seven world class titles!

Frisbee has not only brought competitive challenge to her life but love as well. It's here she met her husband of 20 years. Together they have a son named Jacob and two dogs, Roger and Oliver. Besides a love for health and fitness, Cindy enjoys the outdoors, traveling around the world, and attending Seahawks games.

Cindy teaches the early bird class, join her at 6:15am on Tuesdays.

DUNCAN MITCHELL
Growing up, Duncan spent his summers on Vancouver Island. He knew that one day he would move to the Pacific Northwest. In 1973 he made the move to attend graduate school at the University of Washington.

Duncan happened upon the role of cycling instructor at another club in 2005. He took over a class and since then has expanded his teaching. Whether it’s swimming, cycling or running, Duncan loves to work out and stay active. By working on technique and strategy, Duncan believes you can do anything. He has competed in countless triathlons and 6 ironman races, including 2 Hawaii Ironman World Championships. For the last several years, Duncan has been spending 1-2 weeks every year in Arizona riding with PACTOUR. The rides range from 70-120 miles per day and fuel his fire for the riding season. The PACTOUR is also a group that trains serious riders for Ride Across America (RAAM) which he hopes to do in the next couple of years.

Duncan teaches on Wednesdays at 6:30pm. Join him for an indoor ride that feels like you're outside!

Streamline Your Swimming
By Dan Lavin, Aquatics Director

The streamline position is perhaps the most important aspect in competitive swimming. This position refers to the position of the body while it travels through the water. In this position, racers can reduce the amount of resistance the water has on their bodies to help them move faster while exerting less energy. In conjunction with this position, the athletes at the Beijing Olympics also wore the latest design of swimsuits to help reduce the amount of friction created in the water. With both of these aspects in use, spectators saw some of the greatest competitive swimming in world history.

Aquatics Director, Dan Lavin, put together this drill to help you recognize your best streamline position.

THE DRILL:
Place your arms down the sides of your body while flutter kicking on your stomach.
As you travel through the water, raise and lower your chin. The affect of this creates resistance because your body position is not level. Note which position your chin is in that provides the least amount of resistance.
Once you’ve discovered this position angle, try adding arm strokes.

Returning to this position will help your glide, reduce your level of effort and make you faster through the water.
