Increase Your Efficiency in the Water to Build Speed
By Dan Lavin, Aquatics Director

Integrating changes to your swim strokes or workout routines can often be so difficult that it becomes easier to throw in the towel, than work through the challenges.

Most seasoned swimmers find it hard to take on new ideas or methods to improve their swim stroke, when they feel their current way works just fine. It’s likely a swimmer could go faster and move through the water cleaner if they modify their stroke.

Welcome Laurie Leonetti

Welcome the newest member to our fitness team - Laurie Leonetti. Laurie is not a stranger to the Seattle Athletic Clubs. She started her career with the clubs as a massage therapist, personal trainer and group exercise instructor, eventually moving into membership sales at our downtown location. Laurie is a former competitive triathlete and ultra runner, so she knows what it takes to be disciplined and focused on a goal. Celebrate Our 30 Year Anniversary with Us!

2010 marks the 30th anniversary for Seattle Athletic Club Northgate. As we take a moment to look at the club’s history, we recognize that the club could not have achieved this significant milestone without the support of our wonderful members, exceptional team of professionals and our surrounding communities.

In celebration of our 30th anniversary we would be honored to have your attendance at our gala event on Friday, June 18th from 6:00-9:00pm. The event will include live entertainment, light fare, and drinks! Free childcare will be provided with reservations - space is limited. Reservations can be made with Kid’s Court prior to June 12th.

Instructor Spotlight, Jimmie Warren

Did you know our very own Breakfast Club instructor, Jimmie Warren, has been teaching at the club for the last 18 years!? Jimmie originally came to the Seattle Athletic Club in 1980 and started training to be an instructor under Dave Gilbert. Both Dave and Jimmie were one of very few male group exercise instructors at that time. He left for a short while and returned to the club in 1992 - since then he has not missed a single class.

Now at 66 years of age, Jimmie still teaches every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning at 6:00am and packs the gym with participants. Some of our members have been taking his class for more than 18 years and have followed him to wherever he is teaching. Jimmie has never missed a class. He tributes his health to the healthy lifestyle he was brought up in and the consistent exercise he has religiously gotten.

Give Jimmie’s class a go sometime. His Breakfast Club class is every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6:00am sharp!

Cardio-Respiratory Training: Why and How Do I Get Started?
By Fernando Rosete, Personal Fitness Trainer

Cardio-respiratory exercising is very important to promote overall health and achieve high levels of wellness. Among the benefits, we can consider the following:
Cardio-respiratory exercises improve our capacity of burning fat as energy.
By working the heart muscle, we can enlarge it, increasing the capacity of pumping blood with each stroke to working muscles.
Increase in the amount of oxygen distributed to body tissues.
Reducing the risk of heart disease, lung cancer, diabetes, stroke and many other conditions.
Stress reduction.
Increase levels of energy.
Improving your mood. Yes, cardio-respiratory exercises help us feel "happy".

Succeeding In Yoga Your First Time Out
By Jonathan Yurkanis, Yoga Instructor

Finally it’s your turn to give this yoga thing a whirl. You know plenty of people who already do yoga, right? There are those folks at work who talk about it like it’s fun, and you also have a few friends who go to their “classes” regularly.

But now here you are. You are about to enter the room where your first yoga session will soon begin. You are facing a new and mysterious situation where you have to do – well, you don’t quite know what. It’s stressful, frankly, despite the nice music playing from inside the room.

Gait Analysis - Why Do I Care About My Gait?
By Phil Armiger, Physical Therapist

Gait. It’s how you walk (or run). It’s how you move from foot to foot, swing your arms, bend your knees and twist your hips. It is a major factor in how efficiently you get from place to place. An efficient gait places less stress on the body and is therefore less likely to result in overuse injuries.

Squash Club Championships

The year ending Club Championships featured some great matches and surprises along the way. In the C Draw, two newcomers, Ernie Climenson and Thomas Verhasselt, made it to the Finals with Thomas winning in a tough 4 games. Consolation went to Ted Kenefick. Joe Kulgren picked up his game and picked up first place in a tough B Division beating Jeremy Ritzer in the Final. The Consolation bracket was won by John Lincoln in a hard fought 5 games. The A Finals was a very well played and exciting match between Andy Slater and Scott Hamon. Andy served for the match at 8-6 in the forth, only to lose in a tough 5th game. Thanks to all who participated and a special thanks to Don McCombs who made a wonderful smoked pork chili and jalapeno corn bread for the party on Friday. The winners were awarded new racquets and bags for consolation prizes - all provided by Head. Congratulations and thanks again to all our squash players!
